Cupp Enterprises, Inc. (CEI), founded in 2000 by Bob Cupp, Jr., was initially created to fulfill a need to develop additional recognition in the competitive golf design market. While Cupp Enterprises has been in existence for a little more than 7 years, the journey has been a life long passion that began with childhood dreams and some natural artistic ability. The purpose of CEI is to provide golf course design services that fit the needs of the client. Bob’s full time position as a senior design associate and construction manager with Cupp Design, his father’s company, might have been sufficient for most, but Bob’s zest for the golf business and his desire to expand their market share, lead to some restructuring that allowed Bob to tailor golf design services to a broader market. By utilizing valuable lessons from his work history, Bob further refined the direction of CEI in 2005. During this series of changes and events there were two considerations that came to the forefront, 1) to be able to provide golf design services that are capable of competing with any design firm, regardless of fee structure, and 2) to always work within the parameters established by the Owner. Bob has been in the golf course industry for more than two decades and brings with him the experience of more than 50 projects. The majority of Bob’s history is in the design side of the golf industry, where he learned the business from the ground up. Bob has a passion for design and an even deeper conviction for establishing a true reality for Owners and projects. Bob understands that this endeavor comes with a tremendous responsibility to their clientele and this responsibility is the foundation of the principals of CEI. Joe Salvatore has been in the golf course industry for nearly 25 years. Having spent the early years of his career working on the grounds crew of a local golf course, he developed a true passion for the game and a great appreciation for what it takes to maintain a quality golf facility. Joe has been involved with only a few companies throughout his career and in each instance promoted as far as possible within each company. Along the way Joe developed noteworthy experience fueled by a remarkable desire to learn and a tireless work ethic. Joe’s ability to manage project schedules and budgets is only matched by his skill to forecast manpower and equipment needs. Joe and Bob would rather walk away from a project than mislead a client, just to sign a contract and this axiom will never be compromised. |
Part of the CEI process is to fully understand the Owner’s wants and needs, as this is the only way to provide responsible design, paying particular regard to budget, schedule and design preference. The insight here is to educate the Owner to the point that there is a reason, or reasons, for recommending certain methodologies and that there is a difference between necessity and excess. Not that one or the other is a bad thing, but simply that there is a difference. The critical note here is that it takes experience to be able recommend the proper prescription for any given scenario and to be able to estimate a realistic cost to implement the prescription. Through their nearly 50 combined years of experience in golf, Bob and Joe have had the opportunity to work with a multitude of talented people, including several PGA Tour Players. The most influential people of Bob’s career have been his mentors, his father, Bob, Sr. and Billy Fuller, as well as several other golf industry experts. As the old saying goes,“the teacher will arrive when the student is ready” and Bob and Joe have been listening and learning for a long time. These remarkably talented people have all imparted valuable knowledge and important lessons, all of which have aided in the development of this comprehensive design program. In addition, Bob and Joe have been involved in projects that represent the full gamut of cost and worked in nearly every conceivable climate and in a wide variety of terrain. They know what it takes to stretch a budget and they also understand how to get the most from every dollar. The design process is not unique, but it is complete and it is the implementation of each and every step that makes the process and the end product successful. |
